Music

Rapha's music was very diverse. He would play in duo, trios, alone, or with other groups. He would sing in many languages English, Italian, French or Spanish. He would perform in front of vast audiences, in tiny pubs, or busk in the streets with equal pleasure and success.

“Hello, my name is Raphaël Dufresne, I am a French/Sicilian guitarist based in Bristol. I am a founding member of local band Immigrant Swing (2012- ) & Timbertone (2014-).
Music has been a very creative outlet in my life since a very young age. I teach, compose and arrange music as well as organizing rehearsals, recording sessions and gigs.”

Raphaël’s Musical Involvement

He was influenced by jazz, rap, traditional Mediterranean music, French chanson, gypsy jazz and many others. In the "lyrics" repertoire, his references were Fabrizio De André, Django Reinhardt, Jacques Breil , Brassens, Rosa Balisteri, to quote only few.

Apart from being the co-leader and founder of the Immigrant Swing Band, Rapha was also involved in many other projects which included:

  • a solo/duo show where I mainly perform French and Sicilian folk music . Duos were performed mainly with Pasquale Votino (double-bass), Helen Jenner (flute) or Annalise Lam.

  • The Chantilly Dance Band which is a 1920's Swing Band (previously named The Prohibition Jazz Band, today The Jack Calloway Dance Band)

  • The Gypsy Jazz Band, with Jay Singh (guitar) and Alex Taylor

  • He also used to organize with the band Immigrant Jamms, a weekly Open mic/Jam Session every Thursday at the Rope Walk

  • Finally, he sometimes played as a Session guitarist for various bands around Bristol.

I introduce myself
I am the music

I introduce myself,
I'm the music.
The only think eternal and omnipresent
U can find in the central pub or in Amazon rainforest.
I have always been and forever will be left
Have turned the crowns and invigorate the riots
was in the sacred rituals of the tribe and in the room of an harlot
marched with warriors and danced in village festival in the far east.

If there was a god of the music
that there was no bad music
that music plays you like an harp
it comes up one string
makes you resonate of the same thing.

Not if that string strides and your soul remains in harmony,
you will not love that music.

But, if your soul is perfectly in tune
you like vibrate of peace with Tibetan music
as throb with tribal
then, you can love all the music and accept all of yourself.

I introduce myself,
I am the song.
Accompanied the traveller in the lonely path
The prisoner whistled me on his way to platoon
Teased the powerful, welcomed the desperate
Sang me the lover under the balcony and the miner in the mine.

And if there was a god of the music
He will not understand our words
He would be expressed through music
And would move through dance
and if we had a free moment now
he will probably watch us
Don't have something better to do than gladden with a god music
Don't have something better to do than show him
that you also can move through dance.

For Raphaël music could make the difference:

In education:

"I have been playing music since I was 6 years old, starting off with Classical Violin going through the grade system. Age 14 I changed direction and picked up a guitar but using an "ear based system" rather than an academic grade based system. This path has provided me with the necessary theoretical tools and knowledge to teach music on an academic basis, but I am very open to different approaches depending on students' individual inclinations and personalities. My main focus is on balancing rational knowledge (music theory) with an intuitive approach. I believe the development of intuition is underrated by our current education system yet it is key to successfully applying music theory to create music."

In teaching:

"I have worked for two consecutive summers 2012 and 2013 as a language teacher with LanguagePoint in Tuscany, teaching a range of ages from 8 to 17 year olds. Music was an essential part of my teaching method and I eventually setup an extra-curricular percussion workshop which the students thoroughly enjoyed, culminating in an organized show at the end of the Summer".

In communication:

"I was volunteering in Kenya with Camps International, teaching in a school. I particularly enjoyed interacting with children with whom I did not share a common language, music was particularly good for that in some cases becoming our main form of communication".

In creating networks of friendship :

Mattia, a band mate, says : "He made friends so easily so he became the centre of all the many friendships that existed around us, he was the pinnacle, the central connection. People loved the band and followed us because of the friendships and not just because of the music. Rapha had a way of embracing everyone. He was the core of Immigrant Swing, the silent Manager who organised gigs ensuring they benefitted everybody.

"Harvey's Cellar Weekly Open Mic & Jam Session is back every Friday, right in the thick of Bristol Town Center, with hosts Mirko Cossu and Raphaël Dufresne. The house band offers a variety of styles from Jazz/Blues to Latin, European Folk, Rock and more! All styles are welcome (including poetry, spoken word, storytelling etc..) in a warm and friendly environment - whether you are a beginner hitting the stage for the first time, a seasoned musician or simply a spectator enjoying the live performances. An ideal setting to develop your performance skills and linking with other live performers. The night kicks off at 9.30pm with the open mic, guests are welcome to play solo, even though we encourage collaboration with other open micers or the house band itself to keep the music fresh and spontaneous.
