Immigrant Swing

Immigrant Swing is a band founded in 2012. The band had its own style and his own public. Even though the band has changed over time, their motto never changed: "together with patience, love and understanding, we will get there, wherever that is".

The name Immigrant Swing is evocative of GYPSY, of IMMIGRANTS & LOCALS coming together and also of THE SWING RIOTS, a widespread uprising in 1830 by agricultural workers in Southern and Eastern England.

Immigrant Swing members spawn from diverse intercontinental backgrounds with French, Columbian, English, Welsh, Chinese and Italians in their midst, the diversity being not only cultural but also musical, with individual members trained in different styles.

Immigrant Swing offers its own blend of Bristol Riot Swing - a high energy, foot stomping, acoustic music merging sounds from around the globe, with influences ranging from Gypsy Jazz & Blues to Mediterranean Folk & Hip Hop. Featuring a swinging rhythm section - driven by Double Bass, Manouche Guitar rhythms and Drums. This provides the foundations for MCspokeMao to deliver his own style of beat-poetry, with Clarinet & Violin ripping through the melodic lines.

The story of the band

The band idea started in 2012 when Rapha and Mao first met at the Old Duke and decided to mix up their musical experiences and lives.

A few months later, the band IMMIGRANT SWING was born, with Tomaso Azara, a classical Tuba player from Sardinia, Tom Parry, an Irish clarinet player and Mattia Collu, the drummer just arrived in Bristol from Sardinia.

The band members build up together their sounds in an experimental way, in the studios but also through jams, busking and "charitable" concerts.

People will remember the first concerts in All Hallows Hall, a community space renovated by artisans and artists (December 2012); at the University College, UWE; at the Bear Peat for the PRSC in May and November 2013.

The Old Duke became for the band a sort of "spiritual house".

By the end of 2013, the band had already become very popular.

In 2014 Helen Jenner, an Irish flautist, joined the band.

The summer season brought the band to play at important festivals, such as Bristol Harbourside, Bestival, Mount Pleasant, etc

The years 2015 and 2016 were very creative and innovative for the band.

Early in the year 2015 Annalise Lam, a British classic violin player of Chinese origin, joined the group.

In autumn, Tomaso Azara was replaced by Federico Leonori, a classical and jazz musician from Rome, playing the double bass.

The open jam session organised weekly at the Rope Walk became for the band a new ground for experimentation.

The band became very popular nationwide, participating in many important festivals such as Harbourside, Bestival, Hootananny, Volksfest, Richmix London, Meatopia, Little big Gig Festival, Cornwall, etc.

Their first album, FIRST WORLD PROBLEMS, was launched on the 5th of November 2016, at Mr Wolfs.

On the 12th of April 2017 the Immigrant Swing Band performed at the Glastonbury FM, Gladio Radio.

An important interview was released on that occasion.

IMMIGRANT SWING FAMILY

After the sudden departure of Raphael, the band decided to go on with a new name :  IMMIGRANT SWING FAMILY

Some of the members of the initial Immigrant Swing band rejoined.

New musicians and old fans came in with enthusiasm in order to preserve the heritage and keep the spirit alive.

The core Immigrant Swing Family band includes 8 members:

Mao Bazurto (vocals)

Mattia Collu (drums)

Tom Parry (clarinet)

Federico Leonori (double bass)

Annalise Lam (violin)

Helen Jenner (flute)

Richard Jones (vocals)

Stuart Oliver (guitar)

They started experimenting new tunes on old jams and texts and wrote some new compositions, taking part in the Bristol and wider musical scene, supported by Rapha’s family and  many friends and fans.

After 5 years, in April 2022, their new EP, CRISIS, was launched during the Rapha Tribute Concert.

A modest tribute to the great late Raphael Dufresne. Granted (as in taking things for granted) was the very first song Rafa and Mao wrote together back in 2011/2012. Here we see it being preformed by some of the family at Hootananny, Brixton, London.
