Deeds, not Words in the wind

EXHIBITION IN TRIBUTE TO RAPHAEL

12th - 14th of April 2019

The exhibition showcased Rapha’s way : his music, social engagement, friendship networks and “connections” with his world within.

PANELS OF THE EXHIBITION

WE ARE ALL IMMIGRANTS

CALAIS

Calais, Calais, Calais,

Is this a sigh humanity’s gone away?

Calais, Calais, Calais,

So many people from so far away

Calais, Calais, Calais,

All we can do is pray

That tomorrow may prove a brighter day

I hear cries, yet I hear laughter

Is there a better world in the hereafter?

So many journeys have come to an end

In this desolate place at lands’ end

And the sea begins, a sea of despair

And my broken laughter I cannot repair….

OUT OF THE BOX

INFINITE POSSIBILITIES

The canvas begins with infinite possibilities,

Until you point one down and determine reality.

Most believe you begin with a frame,

But who’s to define how far stretches the game?

Ideas are the seeds of the world,

Expanding through time and space

They never rest and always grow in fame,

Expanding for eternity,

No walls can stop them, yet,

Sometimes they lose form…

When an actor’s art extends beyond the stage

He can finally breathe free, breathe free of the cage.

The boundaries of the stage are nothing but illusion,

Defining space to avoid intrusion.

What usually happens is a state of confusion

Where people mix up truth and illusion.

Frame, Frame, Frame the mind

All parts of the system strictly defined

Coz, when in isolation,

You cannot see the greater picture

And what it means for thee.

Coz, on a wheel tending the machinery,

No idea where the energy flows over finally.

Compartmentalisation of space, mind and time.

You may as well turn off the light,

Stop its shine,

Stop your thoughts,

Read the nought.

God gives for both,

The black is by design.

Enable to see

what I struggle to be.

Caught in the detail,

Not understanding

That the frame is there,

for getting you into attraction.

INHABITING NATURE

PLANT A SEED FOR A FUTURE BLOSSOM

BODY SOUL AND MIND:
PEOPLE AS FELLOW BEINGS

COMMUNITIES FOR A BETTER FUTURE

Can you grow, can you sow

Can you tend for your own

Or do you need Tesco

Deciding which seeds are grown

With no intendancies we will

Fear for tomorrow

How will we feed and shelter our sorrow

In a world of plenty but

Of nothing at all

All one can do is hear nature’s call

You can hear her weeping across the sea

Ho my sons what has happened to thy

None growing but one is how for you

Have come

Leaning Tesco deciding what we will become.

TESCO

RAPHA’S JOURNEY

FOREIGN FICTION

Travelled far and wide

On an intercontinental mission,

Observing cultural transmission

Through language and its diction.

Wandered so long in a foreign land,

No longer recognising one nation as my

stand.

Yet, some find it hard to understand

What a cock may be doing in a desert

sand.

Remember patience, be wise,

As misunderstandings may arise,

For when the sun sets in one place,

In another it will rise.

And who will be there to tell you: “my time

is night!” ?

It is night that he rides?

Yet I thought that it was daylight!

Here I listen to a foreign tongue,

Speaking words who’s meaning to me is

none,

Otherwise idle descriptions

Of a tale not my own,

Suggesting what we wouldn’t,

Back at home.

Symbols and meanings begin to appear,

What exactly is not yet clear!

DEEDS NOT WORDS IN THE WIND

ACTIONS ECHOING THROUGH TIME

People get stuck in certain frames of mind.

They need to classify themselves and others in categories whether communist, capitalist, black, white, rich and poor.

Once a mindset is in place, it is difficult to get over it, and people tend to stick to their view no matter what.

Defining oneself and others in certain “groups” creates intolerance, misunderstandings, ignorance and lack of communication. It creates the difference between “US” and “THEM”.

A typical example of this is Religion.

What matters is not how one lives his life, but, what one says about his beliefs. A person living with Christian values without calling himself a Christian, is not a Christian, and, as such, some will say that he will not go to heaven…

But, if someone lives his life according to the precepts without considering himself one, how does not that apply?

And so, it becomes all about what people say they are,

That’s what becomes important.

Not the actions which one takes through those words and thoughts.

So, many spend their days criticising capitalism but, at the end of the day, go to MC, drink coke and buy Nike…

It is not a matter of words in the wind, but a matter of actions echoing through time….
